This was our first visit and we wanted to try something traditional. We shared a starter and a main course.

Chiles Relenos -3 for R33
Smoked jalapeno’s stuffed with queso fresco, served with rocket, radish and picked red onion
Verdict: The guacomole was nice and the dish was tasty.

Chicken Mole Pablano - R80
The National dish of Mexico, tender chicken served in a complex and rich sauce consisting of tomato, 32 herbs and spices, almonds, walnuts and a hint of couverture chocolate, served with green rice and refried beans
Verdict: The sauce was really good and with all the different flavours it was an extremely tasty and hearty dish.

The service was excellent and we enjoyed our meal

The breakfast consisted of the usual, fruit, yoghurt, hot selection, toast, etc.  Drinks excluded.

We ordered some filter coffee.  It was dreadful!

We were very surprised to see that a lot of the serving dishes were actually empty and had not been refilled.  When we pointed this out to a waitress, she said the food was coming.  We waited around for quite a few minutes and finally decided to start dishing up from the options we had.  When we got to the scrambled eggs, we found they were cold and rubbery.  When we pointed this out as well, we were again told that the fresh eggs were coming. By this time the rest of our food was getting cold.

The bread was finished and there was no one there to help.  We eventually spotted some bread behind the counter, which we hauled out and made some toast.

The eggs and other empty dishes were still not filled, so we decided we would have to go ahead and eat the already cold food on our plate.

What was described as bacon was not bacon.  I don't even think it was macon.  Still unsure what it was supposed to be.

The food was cold, rubbery and bland.

Incredibly disappointing.

Whether it's a good idea or not for a seafood restaurant to serve a breakfast buffet is still up for debate. But if you are going to approach something like that, it needs to be better managed.  Refilling empty dishes is essential.  As is keeping the food fresh and warm.

We will definitely not be having breakfast buffet at CTFM again until these concerns are addressed and improved upon.

Ashton's Restaurant Restaurant - Greenways Hotel (Claremont)

We went for a Friday lunch and found the restaurant completely empty.

The waiter was very friendly although he seemed a little inexperienced.  Our meal took 35 minutes to arrive.

Ribeye Steak: 250grams. Advertised as tender and juicy.  Ordered medium.  Arrived extra well done.  The steak was absolutely terrible.  It was completely dry (even with the tiny bit of café de paris butter placed on top), extremely tough (almost inedible) and tasteless.  If there was an award for the worst steak ever, this would be the winner.

The steak was accompanied by some crushed baby potatoes with burned skin.

Chicken: small portion which arrived dry and overcooked.  Accompanied by rice and gravy.

Incredibly disappointed.  We decided not to complain, as we were very hungry and didn't want to have to wait for the food to be redone. We did mention our disappointment to the receptionist as we were leaving, but we received a blank look.

We may give Ashtons another try at some stage.  I have a hard time believing this is how their food usually is.  Afterall, this is a 5 star hotel.
