"While there are many places serving the best coffee in town, very few can serve it with a view of the ocean, two eggs benedict meals and free wireless. What the heck, let’s throw in two cappuccino’s too. Get all this and service with a smile at Empire Café for R67."
Before visiting Empire Cafe, we visited their website. Reading about the recent "new look", we were looking forward to our first visit.
Downstairs was almost full, so we decided to walk up the spiral staircase to sit upstairs. We sat down at a two seater table. Unfortunately the table had a serious wobble, so we both sat with a foot on the table leg to prevent it from wobbling.
Looking around the room made us cringe a little. Upstairs was in serious need of some TLC. The carpet was worn through and tatty. It would have been a nice view of the sea if you could see through the filthy windows.
The cappuccino arrived quickly but there was literally no foam. When I asked the waitress where the foam was, she told us this is the new way they make cappuccino. Pardon?? Anyone who has any knowledge of a cappuccino knows it's 1 part espresso, 1 part milk and 1 part foam. I had to ask them to bring a jug of foam.
Not long after that, the eggs benedict arrived. At first look, the hollandaise sauce was completely invisible. The bread they used was very crumbly and fell apart every time we cut through it. Basically we had poached eggs on crumbly bread/toast. Didn't enjoy the taste at all.
We both wanted to finish our meal and get out of there.
Extremely disappointed!
Service was fine. The only plus I can think of was the free Wifi. |
