Dunes is ideally located right across from the beach. Well known to be very popular with families, as it has plenty to keep the children busy outside.

We had been to Dunes before but the service was so bad that we had our coffee and then went elsewhere for breakfast.

We decided to give them another try, this time for dinner.

When we arrived, we were extremely surprised as to how they had transformed the restaurant from a beach Bistro to a rather smart restaurant. The waiters were all smartly dressed and the tables were very well presented. A totally different atmosphere from our previous daytime visit.

We were seated next to the wine fridge which was a little awkward, as there was too much activity right next to us. Being winter, they had the heaters on. There were two heaters right above where I was sitting and it became extremely hot and unpleasant.

We had the Avocado Ritz and the Saldahna Bay Black Mussels as our starters. The Avocado Ritz consisted of mainly Avocado and included 3 (THREE) queen sized prawns. The dish cost R68.00, making a prawn cost around R20.00 each. Value for money? No. But the dish certainly was very tasty. The Mussels came in a large bowl with lots of sauce and the Dunes homemade bread. The dish was overflowing with mussels and at R48.00 certainly was better value for money. Although the mussels were not particularly nice.

We both had their fillet steak for our main course. The steak was very tender and cooked to perfection. The plate was a little bare, as all it came with was 4 of their homemade chips and some sauce on the side.

For dessert we had the Double chocolate fudge pudding (which sounded a lot better than it tasted) and the Malva pudding (which really didn't taste like malva pudding at all). Both desserts were extremely expensive at R48.00 and R42.00, respectively.

The quality of the food was fairly good, but definitely far from value for money. The only good thing is that they presently have a winter special which offers two for the price of one, making the prices more in line with what they really should be.
Overall, we enjoyed our experience and looked forward to going back.

Verdict:
Will we return? Yes
Would we recommend? Yes

We enjoyed our experience the last time we visited Dunes, so we decided to go back for a second time.

This time, unfortunately, we had a somewhat different experience with the service.

For starters we ordered the Herb crumbed button mushrooms and the Green Asparagus spears. Our waiter didn't really seem to understand us and he kept asking us to repeat ourselves. The starters took over 15 minutes to arrive. When they eventually did, we were a little shocked by the fact that we were served 4 (FOUR) small button mushrooms at the cost of R46.00. Over R10.00 a mushroom seemed a little excessive. The mushrooms themselves were done quite nicely and were tasty. The Asparagus consisted of approximately 8 spears and was also quite tasty at R48.00 for the dish.

We enjoyed the steak on our last visit, so we decided to order it again.

Again our waiter seemed very confused when we placed our order. The steak eventually came after 20 minutes. Again, we were shocked when we saw the portion of steak on our plates. They claim that the steak weighs 250 grams. If the steak on our plates weighed as much as 150 grams we would be very surprised. Further, when we cut into them, we were disappointed to find out that the steak was not medium, as we ordered, more like very well done.

Extremely disappointed with our main meals, we hoped for the best for our dessert.

Due to the extremely slow service, by this time we really just wanted to eat and go. We asked the waiter if he could please ask the kitchen to hurry our order for dessert.

We ordered Dutch Apple pie with whipped cream and Double chocolate fudge pudding with ice cream. I guess the kitchen never got the rush order, as our deserts took almost 15 minutes to arrive. When they did arrive, the Apple pie had been served with ice cream and the Chocolate pudding had been served with cream. So it had to be sent back to the kitchen so they could change the order. Another 5 minutes and we finally had our dessert.

Dessert was ok but nothing special.

Overall, we left feeling less than satisfied, especially with the shocking service.
